Day 3 – Bon Voyage!

Saturday, June 16, another beautiful, sunny day around circle found the Groton orchestra making final preparations to begin our journey to South Africa.  We began the day tired from our recording session the night before but revived ourselves by rehearsing a Michael Jackson medley, The Legend, we will play in collaboration with our hosts at Waterkloof High School near Pretoria.  Mr. Terranella kept it short and sweet and let us go early to finish laundry, packing and cleaning up.  After hauling suitcases, instruments, music and cameras to the Schoolhouse, parents and friends gave us a send off party on the front steps of school.  Soon our Bucky Bus approached,  we packed it up tight with cellos, violins, flutes, suitcases, etc., and boarded.  Off to Logan, London, and RSA!

South Africa Trip Day Four:  Londinium by Coach
After a night of flying across the Atlantic Ocean courtesy of British Airways, we were dead-tired.  Our first challenge involved passing through customs.  The folks at the Uk Border Agency decided we were upstanding citizens despite our unkempt looks and we went off to find our tour guide, Margaret.    Margaret entertained and educated us about the great sights of London, or Londinium as the Romans named it- Harrods, the  Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the London Eye, London Bridge,  Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, and, Covent Garden.  At Covent Garden one of the highlights was watching a string quartet entertain the crowd with virtuostic playing and choreography.
Then we headed back to the airport to catch our next flight.  South Africa awaited.  Cape Town was next!
