A Warm Groton Handshake for the New Headmaster

Last Thursday, Board of Trustees President James H. Higgins sent a blast email announcing Groton’s eighth headmaster, Temba Maqubela. We’ve heard from many alumni who know Mr. Maqubela and praised him, and many who don’t know him but were inspired by the selection.

A day after the initial announcement, Mr. Maqubela, his wife Vuyelwa, and their three sons arrived on the Circle to meet the Groton community. After speeches in the Hall, the School community, in true Groton tradition, formed a handshaking line that stretched from near the Schoolhouse to just beyond St. John’s Chapel. Students, staff, faculty, and a number of trustees were rewarded with the chance to meet the School’s next leader and to share in the historic moment. The Maqubelas were rewarded with a warm welcome from each member of their new family.
