Groton Athletes Take Part in Holiday Tournaments

As the majority of students packed their bags and headed home for a well-deserved winter break, the varsity basketball and ice hockey teams were lacing up their high-tops and skates and preparing for holiday tournaments.  Boys varsity ice hockey and girls varsity basketball had the shortest distance to travel as Groton School and Lawrence Academy jointly hosted two of their tournaments.  The boys ice hockey team had a tough draw and lost three of four games, overpowered by Cushing Academy, Holderness School, and Proctor Academy teams. Their tournament highlight came on Saturday, December 17 with a 2-1 win over Pomfret School.

The girls varsity basketball team also suffered three losses to Cushing Academy, Holderness School, and Lawrence Academy. The Lawrence Academy game was the closest, leaving Groton down by a mere two points at the final buzzer.

Traveling to the Southfield School, the girls varsity ice hockey team notched two wins and two losses. Opening their tournament with 0-2 shutout loss to Rivers School on Friday, the girls bounced back the next morning with 3-0 win over The Gunnery. They did not fare so well in the afternoon, losing to Millbrook School 1-3, but were able to cap their tournament with a 5-1 win over the Canterbury School.

Middlesex School hosted the varsity boys basketball team for the annual tournament. Groton was able to beat the hosts in the tournament opener 48-42, but went down against Brooks School in a 41-57 loss.  The boys closed out their tournament with a solid win over St. George’s School 58-52.

All of Groton’s teams are set to return to the courts and the ice in January; check the Groton School website for games and times.
